Summary
Position 96 was the second stamp from bottom left in the block of eight with arrow and plate number. The top left stamp in the block was already detached at the time of the Colonel Green sale in 1944.
The block of eight with plate number was purchased at the 1944 Green sale by dealer Y. Souren, acting as agent for Amos Eno. The block of eight was then broken into the unique plate block of four, the bottom arrow pair (this is the right stamp in that pair) and two singles.
The pair was offered in a 1955 H.R. Harmer auction of the Lieutenant Colonel Donald L. Harvey Collection, where it was purchased by dealer Jack Molesworth. Molesworth broke the pair soon after the auction, and removed the bottom sheet selvage.
It was sold in 1961 by Siegel Auction Galleries as part of the "Brothers" collection to A. Richard Engel, a prominent west coast collector.
Position 96 next appeared in a 1975 Corinphila auction in Europe (Position 95, the other stamp inthe pair, also appeared in a Corinphila auction, in 1966). It was withdrawn prior to sale and placed privately with Superior Stamp and Coin Company who sold it to a western collector. The western collector sold it to famous stamp dealer Raymond Weill some time between 1975 and 1980, when it appeared in the Siegel Rarities sale.
Position 96 is one of the best centered on the sheet.
