Summary
Position 77 is one of the few Mint Never-Hinged copies of the Inverted Jenny. It was sold in a 1959 John A. Fox auction on behalf of Frederick H. Douglas of Rumson N.J., where it was purchased by the Weills of New Orleans, acting as agent for a southern physician, Dr. J.A. Graves. It was next sold in 1982, in a Siegel sale on behalf of Dr. Graves, where it was purchased by another Weill client, Dr. Charles E. Test, for a then-record price for a U.S. stamp of $198,000.
Position 77 remained with Dr. Test until his 20th century stamps were sold by Christie's New York in 1994, where it was purchased by billionaire banker Edmond J. Safra for $173,000.
Edmond Safra passed away under mysterious circumstances in 1999, and the stamp was held until 2014, when it was sold for $576,000 to Gerald Forsythe, an American businessman and auto racing magnate. Mr. Forsythe sold the stamp through Siegel Auction Galleries on March 31, 2021, where it realized $944,000.
