Position 49 was hidden away from philatelists until September 2018, when the stamp surfaced, in pristine condition. Its rediscovery was announced in The New York Times

Siegel Auction Galleries was selected by the descendant of the original 1918 purchaser to auction the stamp. It was sold on November 15, 2018, for $1,350,000 hammer ($1,593,000 with buyer's premium).
