Description

24c Carmine Rose & Blue, center inverted (C3a) position 57, rich colors on bright paper, fresh original gum, small light trace of single hinging

EXTREMELY FINE. A BRILLIANT AND EXCEPTIONALLY FRESH EXAMPLE OF THIS WORLD FAMOUS RARITY.

PROVENANCE
The following account is based on information from Jenny! by George Amick (1986, Amos Press): This copy is position 57 from the original sheet of 100 stamps purchased for $24 by William T. Robey on May 14, 1918, at the New York Avenue post office in Washington, D.C. Soon after, the sheet was sold for $15,000 to Philadelphia dealer, Eugene Klein, who in turn sold it to collector, Col. Edward H. R. Green, for a $5,000 profit. Klein was authorized to break the sheet into singles and blocks, of which Green retained three blocks of four and the arrow and plate number block of eight. The balance was offered and sold through Klein, who purchased for his own account the block of four from positions 47-48/57-58. After Klein's death in 1944, his daughter, Dolores Klein Hertz, was instructed to claim a sealed container held by a Philadelphia bank in accordance with instructions left by Klein. Resting on top of the various stamp collections in this container was the block of inverts. The Klein-Hertz block was sold by Mrs. Hertz in 1955 to dealer, Robert A. Siegel, who in turn placed it with Raymond H. Weill Co. The block was later sold by the Weills to a private collector, 'Mr. B', whose philatelic estate they acquired in 1968 for just over $4 million. The block received certificate number 10 ,000 from The Philatelic Foundation prior to being split into singles by the Weills at the request of a client.
